Why do you need Computer Security?

Many home computer users often wonder exactly why they would need to secure their computer against attacks or security flaws because it is hard to understand why a hacker would would target their home computer. But the fact is, they generally don't target specific people, they simply set out to gain access to as many systems as possible to have a greater chance of achieving their goals, whether those goals be access to your online banking, or another system to use in a denial of service attack, or the hope your system is a business system with a database of credit card numbers to steal.

Computer Hacks and Malware Increasing Every Year

The ease of breaking into an unprotected computer system is frightening, the Internet Storm Center predicted that an un-patched and unprotected system will last just 20 minutes once connected to the internet before being infected. With the ever increasing complexity of software, thoroughly testing security before release is becoming harder and harder. It is these security flaws or holes which are exploited to gain access or control of a computer. Patches are constantly being released by hardware and software vendors to address these holes as they are discovered so it is vitally important to make sure you keep your system up to date with patches, something often made easier by automated systems, which are sadly often under utilised by home users.

Some of the Drawbacks of Poor Computer Security

Whilst you may think an intruder will find little if any value on your computer, do you really want them being able to read your emails? See any file you keep on your computer and take their pick from any of your documents and images? Do you really want someone to use your system to mask their own identity and location as they use it in an attack on some high profile target like a government or bank? Or using your email contacts to try and infect your friends computer's through email they think is from you?
